Working with a poem

This lesson is based on a short poem by E. E. Cummings and focuses on asking questions in English. Students are not expected to fully understand the poem. Instead, they use it as a starting point to ask their own questions and explore ideas together.

The lesson includes a variety of speaking activities, such as creating and answering questions and working collaboratively to build possible interpretations of the poem. Students also look at a Polish translation by Stanisław Barańczak, which helps them compare meanings and notice differences in interpretation.

As a follow-up, students rewrite the poem in “normal” English (optional homework) and discuss a series of simple, thought-provoking questions connected to the poem’s themes. The lesson encourages curiosity, creativity, and confidence in speaking. No pressure to find one “correct” answer.
